Lisa Bate (graduated 2009) Came in this week to talk to level 3 about her recent Northlands Glass metal and glass casting residency, it sounded amazing: Lisa said she learnt so much and met some really inspiring people. The iron casting process was particularly interesting quite physically demanding and a real experience, see the photos in the flickr link below

Here's some photos on flckr of Lisa and fellow artist in residence Katya Filmus, Kate Hobby and Clare Flatley

Lisa specialises in kiln formed glass and metalwork, producing both static and kinetic sculpture. Lisa was awarded an Honorary Diploma from the Jutta Cuny-Franz Foundation in 2011, exhibited at The British Glass Biennale in 2010, and most recently her sculpture Genera Nucleation III was selected by the Jury for the Zwieseler Kolbl Wild Dreams exhibition for the European Advancement Award for Young Glass Artists

Last Year's Crafts Graduate  Mirjana Smith has a great collection of her very successful mixed media teapots at
New Beginnings
11 February-24th March 2012

at the
Porthminster Gallery at Fern Lea Terrace st Ives

When I went to the PV last Saturday Mirjana had  already sold four of the curious chaps!

From Porthminster gallery's website

Mirjana Smith is a recent University College Falmouth graduate. Her quirky, original and witty assemblage art is constructed from second-hand and discarded utilitarian objects. Mirjana's interest lies in the history of their origin, uses and memories, and the possibility that every object's ultimate destination could be entirely different from its intended purpose. The results are often playful and refreshing, giving a new perspective to the familiar.
Mirjana graduated with a BA Hons in Contemporary Crafts from University College Falmouth in 2011. Her work has been shown at galleries and art fairs in London, and in the south-west and the north of England, and is in several private collections in the US.

The Magic Teapot

Here's a few pictures of Jack Doherty Lead Potter from the world renowned Leach  pottery st Ives who kindly came in to the Design centre just before Christmas, to demo his throwing  process to Crafts students.

Earlier in the day Jack had given a fantastic lecture to level 1 Students outlining the history and context of Leach and it's continuing relevance. The day was organised by Phd  student Matt Tyas who also spoke at the lecture about his research work with Jack and the Leach.

Have a look at this link to find out about Matt's work
